In the Rile 'Em Up project, we read In the Time of The Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. This book is about the 3 Maribal sisters who lived in the time when Trujillo ruled the Dominican Republic. These 3 girls were given the name "Las Mariposas" or "The Butterflies". They were trying to free themselves from Trujillo, but unfortunately only 1 of the 3 sisters survived the revolution. We also created essays about a political topic. My political topic was Immigration. We created stencils that represented out topic, and we had to create and alternate art piece.
The people in my critique group was Josh Chiero, Natalie Boyle, and Ricardo Gracida. Working with them was fun. We all gave really good critique to each other and we didn't mess around. I received good critique for every piece of work that I showed my group and I was proud of how everything turned out in the end.
A few things that I learned in this project was that you need to know both sides of a conflict so that you can make your argument or opinion stronger and so that you can be able to defend your argument or opinions. I also learned that you will always have something to improve on. I was really proud of how my art pieces and essay turned out in the end, they were very detailed and amazing. My biggest struggle was my essay because I was really confused on how to construct my essay. I asked some student helpers for help and they helped me a lot and helped me make my essay the best it could be.
I think that I got stuck too much in my essay and also I think I got distracted a lot. I was really proud of how everything worked in the end, but I wish I had used my time more wisely. Next time, I think I am going to stay on task all the time and get things done and out of the way so that I won't stress as much as I did during this project. If there was something that I would change about this project, it would be to have a bit more time doing everything because I felt like there wasn't enough time to finish this whole project.
